2011 was a banner year for DXCC in South Africa. The year produced 49 DXCC applications (initial and endorsements) from ZS stations. In recent memory, the greatest number of applications in a year was 17!
Like in 2010, ZS2 appears to be the place where things are happening. ZS2DL, ZS2EZ, ZS2I and ZS2Y have continued to be very active. ZS2CR joined the fray in 2011-09 by applying for four DXCC certificates. Clearly, a little competition never hurts! On the Digital DXCC list, ZS2s now dominate, with ZS2EZ and ZS2DL the top two stations on that mode and with five of the seven certificates issued to South Africans going to ZS2s. Given that less than 10% of South African radio amateurs are ZS2s, it is amazing that they hold more than two-thirds of all the Digital DXCCs in the country!
Another major milestone is when ZS4TX and ZS6KR exceeded 300 on 7 and 21 MHz respectively. Bernie van der Walt ZS4TX was not only the first to hit 300 on 7 MHz, but also the second South African on any band. Many DXers consider 7 MHz to be a "low band", a fact that makes Bernie's achievement even more impressive. When Hans Kappetijn ZS6KR has also hit the 300 mark on 21 MHz in 2011-10, he became the second South African to reach the milestone on more than one band. Hans already has a score of over 300 on 14 MHz. South Africans now show totals of over 300 on each of four frequency bands (7, 14, 21 and 28 MHz).
Finally, 2010-10 saw another "first" in the DXCC programme: The simultaneous birth of four new DXCC entities! On 2010-10-10, the two countries representing the Netherlands Antilles (PJ8 and PJ9) were deleted when all the islands gained more autonomy from the Netherlands. Four new DXCC countries were created: PJ2 Curacao; PJ4 Bonaire; PJ5/6 St.Eustasius/Saba and PJ7 St. Maarten. As could have been anticipated, there was a flurry of activity, with major multi-operator DXpeditions being available around the clock from each of these locations. The bands were divided into segments by mutual consent, to ensure that the four sudden Most Wanted countries did not create mutual interference. Old timers suddenly had to rebuild stations and figure out which buttons to press on their fancy radios to make it happen. Any Old Timers who could not figure it out will slide down the DXCC Honour Roll by four slots.
The deletion of PJ8 and PJ9 was effective immediately, but DXCC credits for the four new countries were only granted starting 2011-01-01. The Honour Roll was reshuffled in a big way, with most of the changes being out of the way by mid-2011.
During 2010-12, ZS1AU submitted his first-ever DXCC application after concerted nagging and assistance by ZS6P. Dennis has been DXing for decades, predominantly on 14 MHz SSB. It comes as no surprise that Dennis has managed to confirm most of the world's countries through the years, and his DXCC application makes a major splash on the Mixed, Phone and 14 MHz lists. He is now listed in the Top tables in all three categories. Dennis subsequently submitted an endorsement application, and is now on the Honour Roll on Mixed and Phone. With his large number of deleted entities, Dennis is now the highest ZS station on the Phone list.
During 2011-04, ZS4TX reclaimed his Top of the Honour Roll status when his application was the first ZS to be processed after the addition of the PJs. Bernie also re-entered the CW Honour Roll. Both ZS6EZ and ZS6P have subsequently had their applications processed, bringing them back up to their rightful places.
During 2011, South Sudan had a referendum to vote on independence. The outcome was positive, and South Sudan became independent on 2011-07-14. Within two weeks, ST0R was on the bands with a vengeance. Five stations were on the air simultaneously, with many ZS stations making it on six bands and more. Two South African DXers made it on nine bands (1,8 to 28 MHz) and three modes (CW, SSB, RTTY). ZS6RJ made 22 contacts on different band-modes! Unfortunately, no 50 MHz opening seems to have taken place to southern Africa.
As of 2011-08-17, The DXCC Honour Roll has been changed to reflect the addition of South Sudan.
Also during 2011, ZS6KR joined the CW DXCC Honour Roll. Hans became only the third South Africans to achieve this standard on CW. Bernie ZS4TX made a second submission in November, making him the top South African. Hans is just above the entry level, with eight needed.
Finally, during 2011-10 the compiler obtained access to the DXCC Annual Lists from the Fifties and Sixties, providing many details previously unknown. More than 70 new ZS stations were included in this list, including all members up to 1955. The breakthrough is particularly important because 17 stations came to light that had DXCCs issued before the earliest previously-known certificate. On Phone, nine earlier stations were found. The quest will continue to make this list as complete and accurate as humanly possible. Help with specific details like names, dates and certificate numbers would be particularly welcome.

Note: The entry level is 1000 (or an average of 100 per band). The highest South African score represents an average of over 240 per band. ZS6KR's score is composed of credits on the five "classic" bands only, with an average score of over 260 per band.

Note: The columns above are self-explanatory, except perhaps for "Bands". The basic 5BDXCC is issued for DXCC on each of five bands (3,5, 7, 14, 21 and 28 MHz). Band endorsements can be added for additional bands. If a station's score is more than 5, the additional bands completed are listed in brackets, with the figures in MHz. The only available endorsements are 1,8, 10, 18, 25, 50 and 144 MHz. No ZS has ever obtained the 144 MHz endorsement. Those in the know regard the 10, 18 and 25 MHz band endorsements as just a formality, but both 1,8 and 50 MHz are much harder than any of the five basic bands.

Note: In principle, there should be a Top Three in each category. However, Satellite has less than three listed members, while the Mixed and Phone DXCCs have enough participation to warrant a Top Ten. The Top Ten on Mixed and Phone contains only stations still listed as active members in the ARRL list. A separate table with the all-time high scores for these two DXCCs is included in the following section. For all the other awards, all callsigns shown are listed as active in the ARRL lists.

Note: The table above contains only stations currently listed in the ARRL's official list. The table below contains the all-time high scores. Several of the members were licenced just after WW-II, and worked dozens of countries that were subsequently deleted. Their scores are unattainable to someone entering the race now, as those countries are no longer available to be worked. However, to reflect the persistent achievement by old timers over many decades, the table below shows the all-time high achievements in each category.

Note: The term "inactive" means that the station is no longer listed by ARRL. The reason is generally that no cards have been submitted since the introduction of the computer system in the Nineties. In some cases, stations were removed when the operators died. As of 2010, only ZS6BBP is listed as inactive while still being alive (although he lives in Australia).

WA3IKK is now K3WC. W4QCW is now W4DR. ZS6BCR is now ZS6EZ. ZS6LW and W1BB are deceased. ZS6LW is thought to be the first ZS on Mixed on Phone. In all other cases, the station listed is certainly first.
