This list includes all Top Six or Top Ten finishers and all trophy winners in the CQ World Wide DX Contest. CQ Magazine publishes a Top Six in all categories, except in SOAB. In this category, because of the high participation levels, a Top Ten is published.
Up to 1953, scores were simply listed by country, and no world winners were announced. Up to 1959, and in the 1965 CW results, single band listings only showed the top stations, or sometimes the continental leaders, on each band. All stations shown were listed in either of these capacities.
Please let me know if there are errors or omissions; it is not impossible, as these results were manually extracted from copies of CQ Magazine. Unfortunately, most of the RTTY results and some of the CW and SSB results from 1997 to 2000 are not available.
Participation in the Contest has skyrocketed since the early days. Accordingly, it has become harder and harder to make it into the Top Six. These days, the Top Six and Top Ten listings are dominated by DXpeditions, arranged especially for the contest to locations chosen only for their scoring potential.
On the other hand, the number of trophies has also climbed significantly. No African trophy existed before Gordon Marshall W6RR donated one in 1968. Gordon remains the donor, on both modes, to this day. Tom Curry ZS5XA (now ZS6AJD) was the first ever winner of the African trophy, followed the same year on CW by 9J2MX, who is also G3MXJ and a regular visitor to South Africa.
The scoring system and the rules have changed little over the years, making scores directly comparable. Activity has increased greatly over the years, though, so scores that won contests in the Sixties will not even make the winners' boxes these days. Another factor must also be considered: The more careful log checking that exists these days.
In 1974, with the arrival of Fred Capossela K6SSS as contest director, serious log checking was instituted for the first time. Previously, all scores had essentially been published as claimed. These days, every QSO in every competitive log is checked by computer, and suspect contacts are flagged for further scrutiny. Competitive scores are generally reduced noticeably, with a reduction of 1% being regarded as an exceptionally clean log. Nowadays, with the level of checking where it is, one can assume that published scores are very close to the truth. Some of the early scores could be regarded as wishful thinking, and there was even the occasional blatant cheat.

Z21JE, Z22JE (Silent Key) and ZS6YQ (Silent Key) spent considerable time and effort to help me find some of the names associated with old callsigns, and to tell me where these old timers have gone. Thanks!
