    Background

I started collecting awards very early on in my amateur radio career. As time became more precious, I've concentrated only on a few major awards, especially the ARRL's DXCC programme. As of 2000, I became pretty much inactive to focus on raising my daughter. For a decade, all my activity was sporadic, and aimed only to preserve my DXCC Honour Roll status as much as possible. As new countries were added, I tried to work them. Unfortunately, I missed the first two Swain's Island operations due to a combination of international travel, a decaying station and not enough time to do something about it.

In 2011, I started digging for all those old certificates and trophies. I'm not sure how complete the list is, but I can only think of a few omissions (including my local contest certificates, none of which can be found).

In 2011, I had a change of circumstances that allowed me a bit more leeway to play with my radio. I managed to catch the last few remaining DXCC entities on Phone, and only need P5 on CW. However, my biggest single project was to fill up some holes in my WAS wanted list. I've tried to confirm all states on three modes and nine bands via LotW. The quest has been reasonably successful, with just three holes remaining on 1,8 MHz. I lapsed back into inactivity around 2016. Maybe one day...

For now, this is how comprehensive this list is going to be. Maybe one day a few more certificates will come to light, and I'll update the list as and when they do.

    Notes

  • I never received the paperwork for the Araucaria DX Group Award of Merit, and saw my name in a list published in 2002. It was a pleasant surprise, as only a few dozen of these awards had been issued world wide, and I was in pretty select company! I then asked the Group for a copy, and they forwarded me a copy of the original certificate for my collection.
  • The Amateurs Anonymous certificate was printed in conjunction with a light-hearted article in QST several decades before. I happened to be negotiating with Jack about NCDXF sponsorships, and he sent me one of the original certificates.
  • The USA County Award was the first in South Africa and the third in Africa. A note from the Awards Manager, Dorothy Johnson WB9RCY, indicated that 9X5VA held number 972 and 7X4MD number 1285, both at the 500 level. The 1000 level appears to be a first in Africa, although I have not been able to verify that fact.
  • The 2000 CQWW RTTY score was a new single-band record, not only for 28 MHz. I always intended to get around to writing an article about the techniques used in this victory. Although everything was done by hand, using a paper log and a dumb terminal, the tricks should make interesting reading for software authors! I finally found the time in 2012, when the article was published in NCJ. Although I never received a single direct response to the article, I have been told that it generated some animated discussion behind the scenes...
